You can now block Instagram from tracking your web activity

If you’re on Instagram, you may want to check out a new feature called Activity Off-Meta Technologies, which allows users to block Instagram from collecting data on other apps and websites you visit.

On Tuesday, Meta announced in a blog post that users have a bit more control over how Instagram tracks their web activity. Plus, you can also download data from your Facebook and Instagram accounts simultaneously. In addition, the company expanded two privacy controls to Instagram that were previously only available on Facebook:

  • Users can now manage “how information other businesses send to us is connected to your Facebook and Instagram accounts”

  • Users can “review the businesses that are sharing data with Meta, disconnect specific ones to further personalize your experience, or clear this data entirely.”

“We’ve heard that people want to be able to easily make decisions for multiple apps at once, so moving these settings into Accounts Center aims to address that by letting people choose their settings for all of our apps simultaneously,” Meta said in a press release. “And for people who prefer to have different settings for each app, that’s still an option too.”

All of the new features will be available in the Settings menu under Accounts Center.

Privacy isn’t a given on the internet by any means. But as more privacy legislation works its way through the governmental bodies of nations across the world, social media companies have begun to comply — and even make changes before the government steps in.
