Xaar sells coating technology to Chinese EV battery companies

Xaar CEO John Mills with Shifang

“Our work with Omijia and Shifang highlights Xaar’s commitment to advancing the EV industry by addressing critical challenges in battery manufacturing,” said Xaar CEO John Mills.

Xaar is aiming at replacing traditional coating methods such as PET film with inks delivered by its eX and Nitrox eX print heads, as well as its intellectual property in ink re-circulation and head self-cleaning.

Shifang, based in Guangdong province, has transitioned from blue PET films to UV ink-jet printing with Xaar’s heads, to which Xaar attributes a 30% reduction in material costs, possibly rising to 50% when Shifang starts making its own ink.

“By integrating Xaar’s eX print head technology with our sensors and systems, we are delivering efficient manufacturing solutions,” said Shifang founder and CEO Zack Zhang.

Shenzhen Omijia Intelligent Technology makes equipment and precision fixtures for the battery industry, and is the print heads to develop UV inkjet coating for lithium-ion battery insulation.

“Traditional blue film coating methods no longer meet today’s safety standards,” said Omijia general manager Henry Liu. “With Xaar’s eX and Nitrox eX print heads, we have achieved stability and reliability.”

The print heads have multiple rows of nozzles: eX has 2,000 nozzles at 720nozzle/inch and Nitrox eX has 1,000 nozzles at 360nozzle/inch. Both can print fluids with viscosity up to 100 centipoise.
