There are a lot of external solid state drives to choose from, ranging from more durable drives for travel to slimmer models intended to fit in any bag or pocket. Samsung sells many of the best drives in this category, and now the company is adding another option to that list: the portable T9 SSD, available in capacities of up to 4TB.
Samsung has unveiled its latest addition to the T-series lineup, the T9 SSD, which the company says is perfect for professionals, content creators, or anyone else who might need super-fast storage. The T9 offers transfer speeds of up to 2,000 megabytes-per-second (MB/s) on the USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface, making it twice as fast as its predecessor, the T7 — with this speed allowing users to transfer a 4-gigabyte Full HD video in just two seconds.
The device comes in three storage capacities: 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB, providing options for various storage needs. Its compact size, similar to that of a credit card, ensures portability without compromising on storage capacity. As far as durability goes, the T9 can take drops of up to three meters high and comes with a five-year warranty. It also features Samsung’s Dynamic Thermal Guard feature to prevent performance drops caused by overheating. The SSD comes with USB Type C-to-C and USB Type C-to-A cables, letting you use it across a range of different devices such as computers, smartphones, and cameras, as well as with different operating systems.
The drive is designed to work with the company’s Samsung Magician software 8.0, which offers features like performance benchmarking, security functions, firmware updates, and real-time health status checks. While you don’t really need to use a companion app for a portable SSD, firmware updates might be occasionally necessary to keep your files secure, so you might as well give it a spin.
The Samsung Portable SSD T9 is now available for purchase from Samsung’s online store, with prices ranging from $139.99 for 1TB to $439.99 for 4TB. There’s also an Amazon listing currently marked as a pre-order, with the drive expected to start shipping on October 16.
