NVMe SSDs are awesome. While these SSDs might not have the same amount of space as spinning hard drives (unless you’re willing to splurge a lot of money), they do have amazing read and write speeds, making them great choices for boot drives, storing games, and, well, pretty much everything. If you have a lot of money to spend on a drive, however, the bigger options might look enticing. Samsung has just launched a 4TB flavor of one of its best SSD lineups, and it’s looking great.
Samsung has launched a 4TB version of the 990 PRO series SSD, which is one of the fastest and highest-quality PCI Express Gen 4.0 drives in the market. This drive is excellent for a lot of reasons — namely, it can deliver sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,450 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s, respectively. Thanks to the upgraded capacity, it’s also able to deliver random read and write speeds of up to 1,600K and 1,550K IOPS (input/output operations per second). This last spec means that it’s the SSD with the fastest random read performance, and as thus, is great for games as it keeps stalls and freezing to a minimum.
It’s also important for a lot of other reasons. For one, contrary to other 4TB or higher SSDs, which are usually double-sided (and thus thicker than usual, making them unfit for thin systems), this drive is single-sided, which means all of the NAND chips are on the same side. Essentially, this means that this drive can fit just fine as a drop-in upgrade on something like a laptop, where space is usually an issue. And if thickness is not a problem, there is also a model with a heatsink, which will run cooler and be more efficient when doing a lot of heavy reading and writing to the drive.
The 4TB 990 PRO can be purchased from $344.99, while the version with a heatsink will set you back $354.99. Both drives will become available on Samsung’s website and other retailers in October, so if this is something you want to put in your PC, make sure to keep an eye out at your retailer of choice.
