Apple has released a minor update to iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 that fixes bugs (including a known bug with QR code scanning on some iPad models) and includes security updates. The release notes are brief:
“This update provides important bug fixes and security updates and is recommended for all users.”
We’re not sure what the bug fixes are, but Apple’s support page for a known issue with QR code scanning in iOS 17.4 suggests updating to iOS 17.4.1. There are security updates as well, but the Apple security releases page says only “Details coming soon.” This is often an indication that one of the security flaws being addressed is being actively exploited—Apple avoids naming the fixed flaw until many devices have updated, to help prevent its use and spread.
The QR code scanning bug is limited to certain iPad models, including the 6th- and 7th-generation iPad, the 2nd-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and the 10.5-inch iPad Pro.
How to install iOS 17.4.1
You will probably be prompted to install iOS 17.4 eventually, but that can take days or even weeks. If you want to update right away, follow these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- You’ll see the update appear, tap Download and Install (or Install Now if your iPhone has already downloaded it).
- You’ll need to enter your passcode and your iPhone will restart after the installation downloads and installs.
