Early benchmarks claim of Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 surpassing Apple’s A18 chip
The information is based on the latest benchmark shared by a Weibo user who has a mixed track record, so it is cautioned that you consider a little of skepticism over this. As for the details, the account is touting the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 would score 3,500 points in Geekbench’s single-core benchmark, surpassing the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro’s A18 SoC that is believed to hover at 3,200 points in the same test.
The source has added that the Qualcomm’s unannounced SoC will also beat the next-gen Apple mobile silicon in multicore and GPU sections. However, neither of the benchmarks were given to support the claim.
In comparison, the Galaxy S24 Ultra (review) equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy scored about 2,250 in single-core based on our testing while the iPhone 15 Pro Max with A17 Pro generates about 2,930 points. To that note, we could build on the fact that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 would offer a massive boost compared to its predecessor if anything of this hold water.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 has a crazy clock speed
Interestingly, another leak seems to add weight to the possibility of this major performance gain of the chip, but it also divulges that the scores given might be only possible with overclocking.
According to user LitterTree66, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is currently being tested to run with the prime core clocked at 4.3 GHz while the secondary cores consisting of cores will be limited to around 3.8 GHz. Those values are pretty high when compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 which has its prime core clocked at 3.3 GHz.
However, the CPU setup is said to be supplied by 1.3V (volts), which is more than the usual power rating required to run a chipset. Hence, the actual processor clock speed and performance could still end up lower.
Regardless, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is seen to add promising speed upgrades, this is thanks to Qualcomm incorporating an Oryon core. The system-on-chip is also utilizing TSCM’s 3 nm node, which allows the chipmaker to squeeze in more transistors while also improving the chip’s power efficiency.
Qualcomm is expected to announce the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in October at the next summit of the company. The first high-end smartphone that is rumored to debut with the chipset could include the OnePlus 13 while Samsung is set to follow suit with the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25 Ultra in 2025.
