Novocmms funding round boosts UK antenna design

Specifically, the company is set to hire additional engineers and salespeople, move to new offices and create 100 jobs by September 2025. Up to 30 of these roles are expected to be created in the next six months, it says. The exact size of the funding has not been disclosed.

The company’s antenna technology is used in a wireless devices such as laptops, tablets and smartwatches, and it aims to grow with smart cities, smart agriculture and smart healthcare applications. It grew out of the University of Birmingham in 2019.

As part of its growth strategy, Novocomms says it is focusing on three technologies for achieving offering more efficient antennas with better performance and lower power consumption: customised antenna systems for consumer and commercial electronics, advanced millimetre-wave technology for infrastructure products, and innovated antenna solutions for mobile satellite terminals.


The company is based in the UK, in the West Midlands, and has its roots in research at the University of Birmingham. It has licensed technology from the university and developed a portfolio of its own intellectual property. It has R&D centres in both Birmingham UK and Suzhou China.

Company founder and CEO Sampson Hu is the inventor of more than 80 Novocomms patents, having worked on the technology since 2009. He is an honorary research fellow at the university and was also founder of of Smart Antenna Technologies, which he led from 2012 to 2019.
