As much as wireless technology has advanced, there are some scenarios where we occasionally still need wires. Maybe it’s for power, or for connecting to a video output. But what if there was a TV that had almost no cables? This is exactly what LG is proposing with its latest TV — which is 100% wireless (except for power) and absolutely cool.
LG has just released the 97-inch SIGNATURE OLED M, also known by its model number, the 97M3. It’s great for multiple reasons — it’s a huge OLED TV with a 4K 120Hz resolution. But there are many TVs like that one on the market currently, so you’re not really likely to buy it because of that. Rather, it’s because of its capability to be fully wireless, with something called the Zero Connect Box.
The only cable going into the TV is the power cord, but all other cord needs will be handled by the Zero Connect Box. Basically, everything that would normally go into your TV, like HDMI cables and the like, would instead go into this Zero Connect Box which will then transmit everything to the TV at a speed more than three times faster than Wi-Fi 6E. This way, you get no functionality loss at all and you still manage to get a TV that looks way nicer without having a bunch of cables hanging behind it. This is especially good if you use things such as consoles that require long HDMI cables going out of it — things like Chromecast are already small enough to just hang behind the TV out of sight.
According to Baik Seon-pill, leader of the LG Home Entertainment Company’s Product Development Division, “the technical feat of the 97M3 was made with LG’s decade-long commitment to creating new customer value as a market pioneer.” He also added that “as well as delivering the ultimate viewing experience on an ultra-large screen, our first-of-its-kind wireless LG SIGNATURE OLED M presents customers with a new level of freedom in arranging their living spaces.”
This TV is currently going on sale in South Korea, with a launch in other markets expected later this year. There will also be smaller 83-inch and 77-inch models in the future, but US pricing is unknown at this time.
