Did you know that you can connect an external display to any modern iPad model? With any of the most current model iPads that has a USB-C connector, including newer models of iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad, and iPad Mini, connecting the iPad to an external screen is really easy, and depending on the iPad model you have, it’ll either mirror your iPad display, or extend the display with Stage Manager.
For the purposes here, we’ll go with the simplest method of connecting an external display to an iPad by using a Warky USB-C to HDMI cable.
Requirements for Using iPad with External Display
- Any iPad model with USB-C (iPad Pro 2018 and newer, iPad Mini 2020 or newer, iPad Air 2021 or newer, iPad 2022 or newer)
- Warky USB-C to HDMI cable (any USB-C to HDMI cable will work, this one just happens to be reasonably priced and well rated)
- Any external display or TV with HDMI input
Setting up the iPad with the external display is easy, assuming you have those prerequisites meet.
How to Connect External Display to iPad
Here’s how to connect an external display to your iPad:
- Make sure the iPad is turned on
- Connect the video output cable to your iPad, again make sure you have the right adapter, for our purposes here we are using a Warky USB-C to HDMI cable
- Now connect the HDMI side of the cable to your external display, or TV
- Turn on the external display if you haven’t done so yet
In a moment, the iPad screen will appear on the external display, and there you go, you’re now using your iPad with an external display or TV!
You can continue to use your iPad touch screen, iPad Magic Keyboard, or any other iPad accessories including the Apple Pencil, while you’re in this setup.
Whether you just want a larger screen to watch a movie, show, YouTube video, or you want a larger external display for doing productivity work, this is a simple setup and it works great.
If you have a 2018 or newer iPad Pro, you can also use Stage Manager on iPad which makes an external screen even better. And if you have an M1 iPad or better, you can sort of mimic a dual-display setup and extend the iPad display to the external screen and gain more screen real estate, rather than simply mirror the screen.
