“TSN facilitates a single converged network where both mission-critical real-time and non-real time data co-exist,” according to the company. “Redundancy features allow for fail-over and increased network up-time, while the packet assist engine off-loads the host processor.”
The IC has logic-level Ethernet outputs and therefore needs external PHYs (bus interface ICs).
Each of the six ports can be configured to operate at different speeds, and four serial
Gbit/s media independent interface (SGMII) and serialiser/deserialiser (serdes) interfaces allow backplane connections, connectivity to SFP (small form factor) modules and cascade switches.
The switch supports the suite of IEEE 802.1Q time sensitive networking bridging features required by IEEE 60802, and also includes hardware to support PRP (parallel redundancy protocol) or HSR (high availability seamless redundancy) – reducing the need for host processor intervention.
For legacy support, two of the ports have ADI’s proprietary real-time Ethernet multi-protocol switch that will interface to 100Mbit/s industrial Ethernet protocols including Profinet RT (Class B), Profinet IRT (Class C), EtherNet/IP with DLR (device level ring), PowerLink and Modbus TCP.
For communication with the host processor, two interface options are supported: SPI (standard, dual or quad) and Ethernet. “If an Ethernet host interface is selected, this port can operate as a control plane and a data plane to the host, leaving five Ethernet ports available for industrial Ethernet applications,” according to the company.
The host interface may be on a different voltage domain than the connections to the external PHY layer devices.
Security features include a hardware root-of-trust to support secure boot and secure update with anti-roll-back. Cryptographic authenticity checking can be implemented, as can secure host pairing protocol. Hardware acceleration is provided for cryptography.
