Don’t be jealous of Microsoft Bing’s new AI capabilities: A new Shortcut called S-GPT integrates OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot into Apple devices. It works as a conversational search engine but can do much more, including summarizing a webpage and creating an Apple Music playlist from a list of suggested songs.
It’s a Shortcut rather than an app, and it’s free to download. There’s a very small fee for using it.
S-GPT integrates ChatGPT’s AI chatbot into iPhone or Mac
In recent months, ChatGPT took intelligent AI out of the realm of sci-fi and into reality. It’s not like talking to C-3PO, but it can code apps and communicate realistically enough to make some AI researchers nervous.
Microsoft built it into its Bing search engine and Windows, and that made MacStories founder and Editor-in-Chief Federico Viticci jealous. S-GPT (short for Shortcuts-GPT) is the result.
“I set out to create a tool that would connect ChatGPT responses to native iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS functionalities,” the developer said on MacStories. “I wanted to create a ChatGPT-based utility that would help you process your data and make things happen on your computer rather than simply answer trivia questions or write poems.”
Viticci’s new Shortcut enables users to engage in back-and-forth conversations with the AI. By default, it provides short answers to questions, though the user can ask for additional information. It can be accessed from the Shortcuts app, an icon on the iPhone Home Screen or a widget. It is also available as a Shortcut running inside Siri.
According to Viticci, some of the advanced capabilities of S-GPT 1.0 include summarizing the contents of webpages, and opening the webpages it suggests on your device. It also can look for grammar mistakes in text in your computer’s system clipboard.
The developer is especially pleased that “S-GPT can make a playlist in Apple’s Music app for any list of songs returned by ChatGPT.”
The Shortcut and a necessary helper shortcut are available to download on MacStories. Viticci charges nothing but the software uses OpenAI’s developer API, which is not free — but it’s close. The developer says his total cost so far for accessing ChatGTP “extensively” is $1.50.
