Three phase mains filters for robots

Schaffner FN30xx 3phase mains filter

“FN3040, FN3041, FN3042 and FN3043 EMC filters are rated for currents of 10 to 30A at 50°C,” according to the company. “The tight-packaged filters are smaller than their predecessors yet offer superior performance.”

Size is 128 x 63 x 50mm tall for the first two, increasing to 60mm tall for the second two which are DIN rail mount versions. Weight is ~440g, with the DIN rail mount adding ~50g.

…40 and …42 versions have MnZn ferrite magnetics, while, for increased performance around 150kHz, magnetics in the …41 and …43 have nanocrystalline cores.

Versions beyond the above choice offer current ratings of 10, 20 or 30A, and Y-capacitance of 100, 150 or 220nF.

Inductance drops with increased current rating, from 3.7 to 0.5mH in ferrite types (1kHz 50mV), with the nanocrystalline cores increasing this to 12.9 to 1.75mH.

Leakage ranges from 190 to 400μA (530V 50Hz) depending on version.

Terminals are screw-types, recessed to reduce the chances of terminal-to-terminal shorts and with flip-up insulated covers to decrease the chance of accidental touch.

“A plastic housing combined with a metal ground plate achieves the lowest possible product weight without compromising EMC behaviour, while hinged terminal covers enhance safety levels by protecting against contact with live conductors,” the company said, which added that the filter are designed so that their different materials are easily separated for recycling at end-of-life.
