In needs an external n-channel power mosfet, and can implement buck, boost, buck-boost or SEPIC (single-ended primary-inductance converter) topologies.
Operation is from 4.7 to 85V, covering 12V, 24V and 48V battery power rails.
Analogue and PWM dimming are possible via a single pin – with better than 100:1 analogue dimming range claimed, with ±12% output current accuracy when dimmed to 20%. PWM dimming at between 100Hz and 1kHz can also achieve a 100:1 dynamic range, it said.
Other features are soft-start, and an open-drain output that can indicate fault conditions including: LED output-over-voltage, LED output-open-circuit, LED output shorted and other faults around the power components. Cycle-by-cycle current protection and thermal shutdown are also implemented.
It has a fixed 400kHz peak current-mode architecture, with spectrum spreading for EMC management. The company claims compliance with CISPR 25 Class 5.
Operation is across -40°C to +125°C and packaging is SO-8EP or U-DFN3030-10.
Day time running lights, fog lights, turn indicators, brake lights and stop lights are other potential applications, and if automotive qualification is not required, AL8866 (without the Q suffix) is intended for industrial and commercial use.
