Gaia GPS is a popular app amongst outdoor enthusiasts, but one of the apps downsides is that it tends to drain a lot battery life on your iPhone.

If you wish to save battery life and optimize how long you can use Gaia GPS for on your iPhone when out on an adventure, whether it’s a hike, backpacking trip, camping, boating, kayaking, or whatever else you may be doing, here are some helpful tips to extend battery life with Gaia GPS.

Battery Saving Tips for Gaia GPS

  • Download maps for offline use – whenever possible, download apps to your iPhone ahead of time so that you do not need to be continuously hitting your cellular connection to get up to date map information
  • Reduce screen brightness – by reducing the screen brightness on iPhone you will save battery life, no matter what app you are using, and the same logic applies to Gaia GPS
  • Disable the compass feature – if you don’t need to use the compass feature in Gaia GPS, disabling it seems to help improve battery life considerably. To disable compass in Gaia GPS, long-press on the weird ][ square looking button in the corner, and toggle the switch for “Compass” to the OFF position
  • Quit out of all other apps – minimize the amount of apps running on your iPhone to extend the battery life and prioritize Gaia GPS
  • Consider running in AirPlane Mode – if you don’t need cellular connection (because you already downloaded the maps data for example) then using Gaia GPS in AirPlane Mode will prevent the
